In Yakutia, near the city of Mirny, there is the largest diamond mine in the world – MIR kimberlite pipe (the city of Mirny takes its name from the pipe). The quarry has a depth of 525 meters and a diameter of 1.2 kilometers. Today the quarry converted into a local landmark. A viewing platform and a memorial sign are installed beyond it.
Mirny is a city of miners. Perhaps that is why it attracts the attention of business people from all around the world. The diamond pipe "Mir (Peace)", opened by geologists in summer of 1955, gave its name to the workers' village, that grew up among the untrodden taiga and changed into the city in three and a half years time.
Within a period of five decades a small tent village has become a modern industrial city with nine-storeyed comfortable buildings and asphalt roads; and the "Yakutalmaz" Trust, having taken the first steps in the development of new business for Russia - diamond mining - has become a well-known ALROSA Joint Stock Company that mines diamonds not only in the Republic of Sakha, but also far beyond its borders, a business partner of De Beers Transnational Company.
