Russian Indoor Athletics Championship brings Yakutia a gold medal
Maksim Afonin did not have just one centimeter to break the record of Russia, established in 1987. The record - 21 m 40 cm - belongs to the three-time champion of the USSR, the winner of the Good Will Games-1986 Sergei Smirnov. A trainee of Nikolai Kolodko topped everyone in putting the shot - 21 m 39 m, that’s his personal record.
The fight for a gold medal in the shot-put sector flared up between Maksim Afonin and the winner of the World Universiade in Kazan 2013, a two-time silver medalist of the country's championship from Moscow, Aleksandr Lesnoy.
This is the third gold medal in the indoor championship of Russia for a 26-year-old athlete, who represents Moscow and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) at the competitions.
