According to the decree of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, the 16th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the UN headquarters in New York is attended by the official delegation of the Russian Federation led by Head of the Federal Agency for Nationality Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Barinov. Chairman of the State Assembly (Il Tumen) of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Aleksandr Zhirkov will take part in the event.
Speaker of the Parliament of Yakutia Aleksandr Zhirkov on May 3-4, 2017, will meet with Ms. Chandra ROY-HENRIKSEN, Chief of the Secretariat of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. It is also expected to meet with senior mangement of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).
As noted by Alexander Zhirkov, it is planned to discuss the possibility of introducing the volume of the system catalog, Material and Spiritual Culture of Peoples of Yakutia of XVII - early XX centuries in World's Museums, to the plan of events of the UN Permanent Forum and AMNH, devoted to the collections of the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution (NMNH) in Washington.
Since 2012 the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) has been working on the implementation of this global project. The aim of the project is to compile the most complete system catalog of objects of material and spiritual culture of the peoples of Yakutia, works of folk artists kept in museums in Russia, the United States and Europe. The project received the auspices of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The first volume of the system catalog is devoted to the collections of objects of material culture of Sakha, Even and Yukagir.
