In 2017 Rosprirodnadzor in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) (Administration of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources) agreed to 33 applications of subsoil users for the extraction of mammoth tusks in the region for 71 tons for a total of more than $ 3.9 million, deputy head of the Administration Tatiana Ivanova told reporters.
"In 2017, the Administration of Rosprirodnadzor in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) agreed to 33 applications for 71 tons worth $ 3.9 million and 1 million yuan ($157.6 thousand )," TASS said.
According to Ivanova, in 2016 23 applications for 69 tons were agreed. "It was agreed to $ 4 million and 220,000 yuan," added Ivanova.
Earlier, the authorities of Yakutia reported plans to create a single operator for the collection, processing and export of mammoth tusks in cooperation with Chinese investors. According to the regional authorities, the creation of a single operator will reduce the share of the shadow market, which is estimated at 30-40 tons and amounts to 30% of the annual volume of production. The market value of a mammoth tusk weighing 50 kg is about $ 15 thousand. Annually in Yakutia it is extracted up to 100 tons of mammoth tusk.
